What you should know about NorthTec
The NorthTec Academic Calendar is published annually, and contains information about the regulations and requirements for the qualifications offered by NorthTec. Students are advised to obtain a copy of the Student Programme Handbook that relates to the specific qualification they plan to study, in order to be informed about any particular requirements that may apply. Northland Polytechnic, trading as NorthTec, is a TEI that is domiciled and operates in New Zealand. The relevant legislation governing NorthTec’s operations includes the Crown Entities Act 2004 and the Education Act 1989.
NorthTec provides educational and research services for the benefit of the community. NorthTec is the only Northland based Tertiary Education Institute TEI that provides programmes ranging from foundation, certificate, diploma and degree levels. Working closely with local and national industries, NorthTec provides practical, quality training that meets Northland’s needs. NorthTec has campuses and learning centres in Whangarei , Kerikeri , R wene , Kaikohe and Kaitaia.

Originally opened as the Northland Community College in 1978, with a staff of ten tutors, the college was hailed as a significant centre for learning and an istrative centre for courses to be run in the wider community. NorthTec staff and management are committed to our Charter to make tertiary education accessible to all Northlanders. We offer our students high quality and industry focused education, with flexible learning options and a personalised classroom approach.
We have solid partnerships with iwi , other institutions , industry and local advisory committees , to further enable us to meet NorthTec's mission of developing Northland and its people through tertiary education. Our staff and established researchers are increasingly collaborating both internally and externally to ensure the quality of what we offer our students. An important strategic component of NorthTec’s role in the development of the North is to support research activities that provide economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts. NorthTec undertakes research to inform the teaching on the applied degrees that we offer.
Applied research is often delivered in partnership with business organisations and involves the practical application of science, knowledge, and technology for specific client driven purposes. The provision of business and industry focused research and consultancy by staff is important to NorthTec. In preparation for giving it a name, Ben has been identifying genetic and physical traits that differentiate it from its nearest relative. More than 40 senior nurses from around Northland attended a research showcase organised by NorthTec’s nursing departmen . NorthTec is partnering with Massey University to develop research activities in Northland aimed at exploring M ori issu . Two NorthTec environmental management students have contributed towards a project of national significance, monitoring . A husband and wife team is driving a marae based digital skills project in Glenbervie, and has started teaching at a Wh . A joint project between Pehiaweri Marae and NorthTec is set to benefit the Tikipunga and Northland community and could . Two NorthTec science students will be spending January in the bush, working on a project which could have national sign .
