Ralph Hotere symbolized a fresh shift in Maori Art that challenged many emerging Maori artists to really think outer the realm of conventional Maori Art His style and technique was unique in the sense that he was using various mediums in ways that no other Maori Artist was working in, nor dared to during this time. The works in pea signify the change and shift throughout my journey as a Maori Artist and Designer, and the crossover in my works between the two Art and Design. The print process and my response to it is the maximum crucial piece of how I create works. Stories are what make us who we are they are the connect between the preceding and the future.
Rich with memory and wairua, the churches of Hokianga represent deep expressions of commitment to spiritual faith, whanau, and community. Art lovers today will find five very different fine art galleries and five distinctly arty shops in the historic settlements of Rawene and Kohukohu. Village Arts gallery in Kohukohu invites a sizable number of artists from Hokianga and beyond to investigate this conjunction for their major exhibition of 2014 entitled Ti Toy opening on Saturday 6 September. The spacious white walled gallery showcases contemporary painting, photography, mixed media, sculpture, furniture, object, jewellery, ceramics, and traditional and contemporary M Fri arts.
Creating from and with nature has long been a way for me to stay connected to myself and my environment. Or is it an art gallery? Village Arts Gallery in Kohukohu is celebrating 10 years of supporting and promoting visual arts in North land with their anniversary exhibition Boxed an exploration of contained space. Says Lindsay Evans, co curator of Ti Toy exhibition with brother Phil Evans, both Village Arts trustees. We invite you to the opening at 4pm Wednesday 13th November in the main street of Kohukohu.
The reveal also celebrates Village Art’s outstanding nine years of operation. As we disclose ourselves to others, inspiring or encouraging them, our story becomes woven into the huge communal story.
